Key Learnings from February

One of our goals for 2021 is to execute better.  Personally, and professionally, we want to do everything with greater excellence.  To do that, we need to set aside regular times for evaluation.

Last month, we published a “Key Learnings” from January.  It was three things that we learned from the prior month.  The goal was to make learning regular and consistent, apply what we learned to our lives and business, and thus, better execute all we do.

With the short month of February having come to an end, it’s time for another “Key Learnings”.  In thinking through them, we hope they are helpful to you.

Key Learning #1:  Learn When to Say “No”

As our business grows, more and more opportunities come our way.  Some of them are farfetched, and some of them are possible money makers for us.  However, not all of them fit with the mission and vision of our company.  If we pursue the one’s beyond our mission, even those that are profitable, our company will ultimately go off track.  Quick income now might actually get in the way of healthy growth income in the future.  Sometimes, you just have to say “no”.

A question for all of us:  Are you distracted by something now instead of keeping your long view mission in sight?

Key Learning #2:  Time Management is Never a One Time Thing

The beginning of the year is when everybody gets a planner.  I do, and I love them.  Time management is an absolute priority for me.  It’s the only way I can exercise, work, and get time with my family.  But two months in, I have to reassess already.  My marathon is this month.  Marching band restarted at school.  Lots of people want to meet.  So, the old schedule doesn’t work.  I have to reassess weekly now, not monthly.  If I do that, I can delegate more and accomplish more.

A question for all of us:  Are you prioritizing time management on a regular basis?

Key Learning #3:  Take a Nap Once a Week

I love working, and I love working hard.  But taking a nap on Saturday or Sunday afternoon has become essential.  Why?  Because no matter what, the brain and the body need rest.  Even with 7-8 hours of sleep a night, grabbing an extra 30-60 mins of rest once a week is rejuvenating.  It makes me more productive during the week.

A question for all of us:  Can you find a chance to sneak away for a nap on Saturdays or Sundays?

So, February was fantastic – even with its ups and downs.  Now, the goal of March is to make it even better than February.
