The Job Market Imitates the Housing Market
Finding a good employee right now is a lot like buying a house. In this market, the seller is in the driver’s seat. In the same way, the employee is the driver in today’s job market.
The home seller gets to dictate the terms and suggest things like skipping inspections, passing on repairs, and asking for above-market pricing.
The prospective employee can do the same. They can ask for higher hourly wages, more vacation time, and be more choosy about where they want to work.
So, what’s an employer to do? Here are a few tips:
Market relentlessly to increase your pool of candidates. Hit up everywhere you can – Facebook ads, Facebook groups, LinkedIn, Indeed, and anywhere else you can think of advertising. The larger the pool, the greater your chance of finding a good employee.
Phone-screen before in-person interviews to weed out people who are not serious about working.
Offer outside the box benefits. I know one restaurant that offers a free meal to employees when they come to pick up their paycheck. It may not seem like much, but for hourly workers, an extra meal makes a difference.
Tighten up your company. If you want good employees, be an attractive company. Examine your procedures to make them more efficient. Clean your workspace so it is a comfortable environment. Now is the time to make those simple tweaks that remove obstacles to employees.
Create a reasonable bonus plan based on company growth. If the revenue is growing, reward your employees for their contribution.
Finding new employees right now must be a part of your marketing plan. Just announcing you have jobs available is not going to work anymore.
