How to Future Proof Your Content

Are you taking steps to “future proof” your content?

“Future Proofing” wasn’t always a concept that I was aware of, but once I learned of it, it became essential to both our content and our client’s.  Basically, “future proofing” means that your content, specifically videos and photos, are not bound to a certain time period or season.

For example, if you take photos or videos in the snow, that content is bound to winter.

Now, that may be fine for what you are trying to accomplish at the moment.  You may not care because your copy or photo is specifically about winter.

But if you are creating photos or videos that you want to have more of an “evergreen” shelf life, then avoiding elements that tie them to specific seasons is key.

So, how do you future proof your content? Here are a few tips:

Avoid snow like the plague.  Videos in the summer with snow aren’t useful unless your target market has snow all year long.

Look for lighting that has an all year like quality so it doesn’t immediately conjure the idea of a fixed time.

Wear clothing that is appropriate in any season.  A sport coat is pretty universal.  A heavy coat is not. Summer dresses are called summer dresses for a reason.

Don’t wear overly trendy clothing so as to date your photos.

No matter what you choose, just look at your surroundings and your clothing and ask, “Could I look at this picture in any month of the year and think it was a present day shot?”  Then adjust accordingly.

Hopefully, this will help you get the greatest use out of your content, and save you some money, since you won’t have to redo that expensive video you recorded.
